The Speech of Alcibiades
The final dialogue of Socrates involved the entrance of Alcibiades. His speech shows the expression of love in everyday life. The appearance of the statesman is to show the impacts of beautiful love on the real life of an individual. Alcibiades emergence showcases the presence of love as described by Socrates in the earlier episodes.
In his further interactions with Socrates, Alcibiades portrays the reciprocal impact of expressing love on other people. Moreover, Alcibiades’ glorification of Socrates indicates another way of expressing affection to the other. It can therefore be deduced that the appearance and glorification of the other leads to the expression of beautiful love.
The tonal variations witnessed during the entrance of Alcibiades show his desire to express deep feelings. I tend to believe that such variations in tone are to achieve a sweet voice that will persuade a loved one into taking certain actions. Apart from the normal interactions that loved ones can have, in real life, the expression of love should be characterized by persuasion to communicate deep feelings.
The issue of self-control has also emerged in the interactions between Alcibiades and Socrates. While Alcibiades tries to involve Socrates in a sexual interaction, the later shows some level of self-control by not giving in to his advances. Thus, as much as expression of love requires some persuasion and submission, self-control is important. This concept is more critical in the early stages of a relationship where the parties are still learning the characters and behaviors of each other. As much as expression of love and deep feelings is needed in the development of relationships, self-control is necessary to assure sustainability.
The Speech of Alcibiades showcases the beautiful love as envisioned by Socrates. The statesman expresses profound feelings of affection in the dialogue. However, despite being very persuasive in his communication, Alcibiades does not manage to physically seduce Socrates, emphasizing the need for self-control in relationships.
