Sleep Disorders and Self-Care Strategies Among Mothers

Qualitative Findings
We interviewed 15 women with a mean age of the respondents was 29.9 years. Majority of participants reported consequences of their poor sleep, such as difficulty concentrating, frequently falling asleep during the day, loss of interest in hobbies and activities, and thinking that something wrong in their bodies.
Participants reported experimenting with a variety of techniques to help improve their sleep. These methods included the use of a variety of substances, including over-the-counter medications (such as diphenhydramine), and prescription medications (such as zolpidem, trazodone, hydrocodone, mirtazapine, quetiapine, and clonazepam), as well as non-pharmacologic methods such as sleep deprivation, meditation, reading, creative writing, watching television, exercising and hard work, and reading Quran and Pry.
We discuss most important themes that emerged through our data analysis. While acknowledging considerable overlap and interplay among them, we group these themes into the following categories which describe the self-strategies to solve sleep disorders and its cause: 1: Describing the problem with two subthemes (childbearing and childrearing factors, psychological factors). 2: Self-Care Strategies with two subthemes (Medicine utilization, physical and psychological circumstances preparation) .

Theme one: Describing the problem

“Poor sleep is one of my problem, I can’t be faire between my responsibilities and my rights. So, I feel uncomforted to go to bed. I always has something missing, I can’t stop thinking on it.”
“I feel bad and can’t sleep alone I need to feel secure”
“I have nothing to do all the day, no need to sleep”
“It’s my nature, I can’t sleep more than 4 hours per day”
“I have a lot of problems, I can’t give up thinking on it”
“I have a lot of tasks for my children, husband, work, home, when I can sleep?”
“Thinking in my problems is my problem”
“I suffer from bad dreams, I hate to fall asleep”
“Feel on loneliness is my problem which take my thought”
Theme Two: Self-Care Strategies
The following information are from the interview of 20 women (one page).
Self-Care Strategies with two subthemes (Medicine utilization, physical and psychological circumstances preparation)
Take warm shower immediately before sleeping”
Drinking warm milk or warm drinking”
Drink Babong
When I want to sleep deeply I go to my children room, to sleep between them”
Before sleeping I try to empty my mind, so I watch an internet program in my mobile”
I believe that pray and Tasbih is my solution to fall asleep”
I took a medication prescribed by my physician and medication not prescribed”
I try to make some physical exercise before sleeping time to help my body and brain to relax”
I prefer to close all lights and be away from any noise”
I eat a lot of food until fill my stomach to waste my time until sleep coming”
I tried to eat the special foods for helping sleep, I tried banana, warm drink, and
chocolate”
I best practice to fall asleep is reading a board books”
Reading Quraan and pray give me relaxation until sleep”
The best thing I do is to stop thinking, but it’s difficult to stop thinking when I am alone”
