Reinforcement Issues and Punishment

Punishment should be clearly understood as encompassing many kinds of responses in addition to the traditional spanking and yelling; punishment, in any of its many forms, is the least desirable and least effective of child management strategies. Discuss the complementary procedures of reinforcing incompatible behaviors (attending to desirable behaviors to “crowd out” the undesirable) in terms of why these are more effective than punishment.
