Probation and Patrol Chapter

In September 2010, the Pew Center on the States’ Public Safety Performance Project released the results of a
survey of 1,200 registered voters’ opinions on crime and punishment. The majority of respondents favored
community-based approaches for low-risk and non-violent offenders. They also favored reinvesting money
saved from cutting back on prison expenditures into community-based programming. Review the results of the
survey by downloading the PowerPoint slides online. Which criminological theories do you see represented in
the respondents’ opinions about crime causation and prevention?
