Issues Affecting the Society

This assignment will allow you to explore an issue facing society while at the same time learning how to use the library. You will research an issue, and write a paper about what you discover, and compile a bibliography of the sources you used. Follow the steps below to begin.

I already found 3 sources for you, I will attach.
• Use the Library Website to locate databases to gather information on your chosen topic. A few databases that you might find helpful are:
• Opposing Views in Context:
• CQ Researcher:
• Academic Search Premier:

• Identify a research question to investigate. A research question guides and centers your research. It should be clear and focused, as well as synthesize multiple sources to present your unique argument. The answer to your research question will become your thesis statement. Be careful to avoid the “all-about” paper and questions that can be answered in a few factual statements.
For example, if the topic you wish to research is School Violence, a research question might be “What are the top causes of school violence in high schools in the US?”

• Write a 3-page paper (typed, and double spaced) that relates your topic. The paper should be titled “Issues in Society:” followed by a descriptive subtitle specific to your paper. The paper must follow the “General guidelines for written assignments,” outlined in the syllabus. The paper should address the following:
• Identify and give a brief description of the issue.
• Present your thesis statement (that you are going to support with evidence in the body section).
• Why is this an issue that interests you? Why have you selected this particular topic?
The issue:
• Go into more depth on the issue – what data have you discovered?
• What population(s) is impacted by this issue?
• Are there different viewpoints on this issue? What are the facts and data behind each side?
Society’s response:
• How are for-profit businesses and organizations helping to address this issue? What are they doing?
• Based upon the research you conducted, what do you believe needs to happen?
• What can the general population do to address the issue? What can you do?

• Compile a reference page listing each source you used. You must include at least three sources in your reference page. Use the Online Style Guides (located on the Library Website under How-To-Guides) to help you cite your sources correctly in Chicago Style.

In your paper, you must use at least one direct quotation and at least one correct paraphrase from your research sources. You must also cite your sources using Chicago Manual of Style.
