International Business Management

International Business Management
Format: Video of oral briefing recorded on Camtasia or similar software in mp4 format
Hurdle requirement: Each group member must appear as the presenter on the video for approximately his or her share of the group’s total of 20 minutes

Further information about Assignment 1 will be placed on CloudDeakin.
1. Description of the task
The target country this Trimester is South Korea and the company is Villiers Chocolates, which is described in assessment document A – Assessment Overview.

For Assignment 1, you are to develop a presentation which will act as an information package to be used to brief an Australian manager about to be sent as an expatriate to the target country for an extended period. You must choose an issue covered in the first five topics of the Unit. Using these topics you are to develop the ‘information package’ as a spoken presentation, with PowerPoint slides, recorded and submitted as a video file. The presentation is to critically analyse the issue you have chosen. The analysis needs to be grounded in theory but relevant to an expatriate manager in the field.

You may choose any issue covered in Topic 1 – Globalisation; Topic 2 – International Trade and Investment Theory; Topic 3 – The International Monetary System; Topic 4 – National Trade and Investment Policies, and Co-operation between Nations; or Topic 5 – Political, Economic and Legal Forces; Social Responsibility and Sustainability.

You may choose the whole topic or some part of it. A few examples of the kinds of issues you could choose are:
• Globalisation: how has globalisation affected the target country, and how has the country responded?
• International trade: how has the target country has developed its trade over the last 15-30-40 years?
• Has the international monetary system made growth easier or harder for the target country in the last two decades?
• Co-operation between nations: to what extent has the target country developed, or is it developing, close economic, political, social or cultural links with its neighbours? How do you see these links changing in the next decade or so? Is it part of a trading block, or does it want to become part of one?
• Ethics: evaluate the approach to ethics in business that is usually found in the target country.

There are many more. The issue you choose can be as narrow or as broad as you like, but it must come from the Unit topics 1-5 and must be relevant to a practising expatriate manager.

Assignment 1 Content Choose from Topics 1-5 from Unit Guide
• Presentation to a senior manager about to be posted to the target country to work on setting up the company’s operations there.
• The purpose of the presentation is to brief her or him on an important issue selected from the first five topics of the Unit. It should include:
• Nature of the issue
• Its relevance to this company in the target market
• Implications for the manager. • Present both the current scenario (2016) and give some comment on the likely scenario in five years time (2021)
What not to do!

• Please do not give us any direct discussion of country profile information or the market for our company’s products or of its industry. These come in Assignments 2 and 3.

2. Format of assignment

You must present your ‘information package’ as a recorded oral presentation as if you were a consultant delivering a live briefing to a small group of senior managers of the company.
Please use a formal presentation style. PowerPoint slides, presentation tools and images should be of high quality. Your presentation should focus on clearly identifying the issue and explaining its relevance to the manager in his or her role in the new country.
Further tips on presentations are provided at:
http://www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/study-support/study-skills/handouts/class-presentations.php.

3. What is expected in your presentation?

• We are expecting a professional presentation.
• Think about the type of language you use. Avoid certain types of language such as slang terms and contractions (didn’t, won’t etc).
• You are presenting this information to a senior manager as a briefing.
• The presentation should be persuasive – you need your audience to understand and remember the key parts of your message.
• You should have an introduction that sets the context of the presentation.
• You need to discuss key information about the issue you have chosen in the body of the presentation.
• You need to make a choice about what information is important to be included in the presentation.
• You should use PowerPoint slides in your ‘information package’ with a person speaking to the slides. You must also have the talking-head type screen shot of each group member for all of each person’s time allocation.
• You should have a conclusion with a summary of the three or four major points.
• You should appropriately cite and source information in your presentation and have a reference list at the end of your presentation, but you don’t need to read out the references.
• If you complete the assignment individually, your video presentation must be no less than eight minutes long and no more than ten minutes.
• If you are in a group, your video must be between 16 and 20 minutes long. Each member of the group must appear in the video for an appropriate time: if there are two in the group each must speak for 8-12 minutes, and if three then each has 5-7 minutes. We will not penalise presentations that go up to 25 minutes, but please try to not go over this.
• Of course adding visual aids (animations, pictures, diagrams, figures and so on) into the presentation is good, so long as they add to the professionalism of the presentation: do not overdo this – we do not want a Bollywood spectacular. You are explaining a business issue, not trying to win an Oscar.

4. Helpful Hints

Recording your presentation

To record your presentation, we recommend Camtasia software, which can be downloaded free of charge and used as trial software for 30 days http://www.techsmith.com/download/camtasia/

After 30 days your licence will expire and to use it you will need to pay for a licence (HINT: don’t download the software until you are ready to prepare the presentation). Deakin University have prepared a short guide to producing Camtasia recorded presentations http://www.deakin.edu.au/learning/cloud-learning/clouddeakin/guides/video-and-audio/camtasia

You may use this to assist in creating your presentation (please ignore step 5).

Camtasia has tutorials on how to use the software. Practice will also help.

• Camtasia allows you to record a PowerPoint presentation that you have on your screen.

• It will record your voice from the microphone built into your computer (or a plug-in microphone if your computer does not have one built-in).
• It can also record your face and you talking, as well as the Powerpoints, using your computer’s video camera.
• You can edit what you have recorded, especially if you have made a mistake, or if at the end of talking there is a silent part, you can delete this.
• You MUST save your file as an mp4 file, by going to Share and then Advanced Export. A 20-minute presentation will probably be around 150MB, and you will be able to upload this video to the Assignment 1 Dropbox.

Alternatively, you may use other software for your presentation. However, you need to be able to save it in mp4 format and the final file must be less than 150MB. We strongly recommend using Camtasia, because it is free, it is easy for you to use, and it is straightforward for us to replay and view your files.

Whatever software you choose, we need to see a PowerPoint presentation, and screen shots of you as per the instructions below for student verification.

It is important to note that the file MUST be uploaded to CloudDeakin as a mp4 file by the due date. If you cannot upload your assignment to the Cloud, you can always use www.dropbox, and then send it to your lecturer for marking.

Student verification

Camtasia allows you to record a screen shot of yourself talking by turning the ‘camera on’ in the record feature. To verify that it is you contributing to the assignment we need you to 1) provide a screen shot of you giving your presentation and 2) scan a picture of your student ID that you will also upload separately with your assignment.

Working in a group

• Each group member is required to verbally contribute to the presentation by a roughly proportional amount (see above).
• It is up to you to work out how you split up the work. You may wish to develop the PowerPoint presentation as a group and then allocate a certain number of slides to each group member. Whatever you think works and flows best.
• If you are working in a geographically dispersed group you can create your recordings separately and then share your project files with one group member who can collate the files in one project as one file, to create the final output. Sharing file programs such as a dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/ will allow you to share the project files, and the person can copy and paste from one project to another.

Marking rubrics

A copy of the marking rubric is provided at the end of this document. You may use this to help you prepare your presentation. The rubric will be used to assess and provide feedback on your work. Please note all assessment tasks are scored out of 100, and are then scaled to the percentage value of each assessment. Assignment 1 is worth 20% of the marks for the Unit.

You will be marked on:

• Context, audience and purpose – 10 marks
• Content development and explanation – 40 marks
• English proficiency – 10 marks
• Oral presentation delivery – 20 marks
• Digital proficiency – 20 marks

As you can see most marks will be awarded for content.
