High protein diet for diabetes and/or weight loss?

A 55 y.o. African American male patient presents with the following:

He has a 10-year history of type 2 diabetes. He has a glycated hemoglobin of 8.0% and a history of High Blood Pressure with medication for the past 3 years. He is a non-smoker.. He has a BMI of 31. He has recently put himself on a high-protein diet Atkins-type diet.

His weight has dropped by 9 lb, his fasting serum triglyceride level has fallen from 185 to 125 mg/dl, and his blood pressure has decreased slightly. His LDL cholesterol has remained constant. He has stage 1 chronic kidney disease.
