The assessment tool was appropriate in giving guidelines on the questions to ask the interviewees as it had given the option of classifying the items into sections. The questions were formulated in a way that they gave the interviewer an opportunity to obtain in-depth information from the interviewees. The questions in the assessment tool assisted the interviewer draw information on the spiritual needs that pertain to the mental health of individuals in health care. Also, the tool assisted in determining the spiritual needs that impact the beliefs and health outcome.

Some challenges inhibited the ability to complete the assessment tool. One of the challenges was that the interviewee was not willing to participate in the interview. The interviewee was reluctant to respond to the questions at the initiation of the interview, so I was forced to pause for a while to allow the interviewee to be free to give the responses. The interviewee was also not comfortable in responding to the questions posed because she found it as intruding on her privacy about her religion. The interviewee was worried that I could share her personal information with a third party, as such remained skeptical for a long time, and only choose to respond to some questions. I had to convince her that the information was only for research purposes and would not be disclosed to any third party. Interference from intruders was another challenge that I experienced during the interview. Based on the fact that the interviewee as concerned about keeping the information communicated between the two of us, she was not comfortable answering the questions when another person entered the room. As such, we had to continuously stop when the interview as interrupted by an external party.

The challenges identified can be addressed in future to ensure that the interview runs smoothly. The interviewees should be informed of an earlier date for planning purposes. If possible, the interviewee should have access to the interview questions beforehand so that they are conversant with the content of the interview. Also, the interviewee should be issued with a written informed consent to show that they have accepted to participate in the interview. The informed consent also indicates that the information availed by the interviewee will only be used for purposes of the research. Moreover, it should be explained that the information they give is confidential so that they can be free to talk about their beliefs and religion. Arranging to interview in a private room is also important in ensuring there are no interruptions during the interview process.
