Comparison of hyperthermic conditions on Heart Rate, rate of perceived exertion and core temperature against thermoneutral conditions.

All written assessments should be word processed. The Harvard referencing system must be used.

Word Limit

There is a 3000 word limit (+/- 10 %) for the written laboratory report. This excludes references in the text and the final reference list.

All lectures and recommended reading will be posted onto CANVAS. Data will also be uploaded onto CANVAS in week 7.

• Articles need to be typed, Arial 11 point, 2 spaced and no more than 3000 words (allowance +/- 10%) in length.

• Please follow the template provided on canvas for completing the report

• You must include the following;

o A clear relevant title

o Abstract (200 words) including; purpose, method, results and conclusion with 5 keywords.

o Introduction with a structured, fully referenced rationale (reason) for the study question, leading to a clear and focused aim. At this level we want you to be able to apply the knowledge rather than simply regurgitate it. So ask yourself for example; ‘why is it important to investigate the effects of exercise in the heat on ratings of perceived exertion?’ Develop an argument for the importance of this question.

o Method including; study design (e.g repeated measures crossover, randomized control trial), participants, consent, health and safety, detailed procedure of what you did (with references to support the chosen method where appropriate), main and secondary outcomes, consideration of reliability and validity, statistical analysis procedure

o Results section with participant characteristics, tables and figures (you can use both tables and figures but DO NOT present the same data in both a table and a figure). Present clearly with a description of the findings. The results section must include both descriptive and inferential statistics (frequentist or Bayesian), appropriately applied effect size statistics are also encouraged.

o Discussion: reintroduce the aim, include the primary finding(s), link your findings to previous literature, explain any differences or similarities in your findings to previous literature. DO NOT present a list of previous studies with a summary of what they found. Apply the findings from your study to previous findings and critique the studies to explain why they might agree/ disagree. For example;

 The current study demonstrated that HR was statistically significantly higher (mean difference 10 beats per min) during and post- exercise in the heat compared to cool conditions. However, previous literature (Bloggs et al., 1999) did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in HR. The disparity between studies could be explained by the difference in temperatures used between studies…..insert the differences between the studies….or perhaps the sample size was small in the early study and therefore they did not achieve appropriate power to reach statistical significance….Now also explain what this 10 beat difference in HR could mean, how might it effect performance? Is it meaningful? For example is 10 beat difference more meaningful than a 2 beat difference?
 Include a small limitations section – don’t just list everything you think that is wrong with your study try to think of the major aspects that should be considered when people make inferences about the findings. For example, was this a randomized crossover design or did all athletes do the heat condition first? Why might this be important and a potential limitation?
 Include potential future directions – these must be feasible and extend your findings

Conclusion: provide a clear take home message
