Write 1 page original response to post below. Change is constantly happening in the world, whether we want it to or not, and organizations are not exempt. Al-Haddad and Kotnour (2015) believe the key to successful organizational change starts with giving attention to the people. While there is no one size fits all approach to managing organizational change, there are several ways before and after a crisis to help employees be prepared for the inevitable (Al-Haddad & Kotnour, 2015). The first is to establish clear intentions and then bring together committees to explore possible problems and have them come up with the solutions themselves (Hall & Rowland, 2016). Weisbord and Janoff (2010, as cited in Al-Haddad & Kotnour, 2015) refer to this as “future research” and stress that teamwork is crucial because employees will have to join together to bring about creative solutions that would be impossible to implement alone. Additionally, an organization that fosters an atmosphere of constant learning is also promoting a culture of constant incremental change (Al-Haddad & Kotnour, 2015). Employees who are always learning ways to improve their job performance and increase profits are able to welcome changes that they believe will lead to progress. Prewitt and Weil (2014) believe that change comes out of conflict in the workplace, and that leaders who empower employees to navigate that conflict can facilitate constant growth as well as teach them how to handle stress, which will be an invaluable tool in a crisis. Finally, it is important that if you expect employees to change, you must provide them with the tools to do so (Al-Haddad & Kotnour, 2015). While it may seem simplistic, organizations often overlook the practicality of introducing new approaches, which can force employees to revert back to the previous method. For example, the Navy is becoming more reliant on technology for all of our maintenance logs, training, and record keeping. However, we have not been given any new or improved technology in which to navigate these new programs. Right now we are sharing one computer between two work centers and there is not enough time in the day for everyone to do what we are supposed to do. This means that some maintenance actions may not be logged, or may be skipped altogether, which could lead to mishaps with the aircraft and gear, or that our recall information and family care plans may not be up to date in case of a sudden disaster. In order to guide a new system, employees must be both mentally and physically able to embrace the change. One tragic crisis that can come about suddenly is a terrorist attack. The scariest part of terrorism is that it can cause fear and panic disproportionate to the actual threat (Munson, 2008). I believe that an attack on an Ivy League college could be the next terrorist action. First, as people we are saddened much more at the tragic loss of young, innocent, civilian lives than we are at other losses. Journalists would be able to focus on the loss of so much potential, and especially hope, and panic would spread across college campuses worldwide. Next, universities do highlight many Western ways that some major terrorist networks take issue with: wanton sexuality and drinking, elitism, liberal ideals, female education, and capitalism. Finally, Ivy League schools are high-cost, which means that at least some of the students will be the sons and daughters of prominent politicians and businessmen. It would be a way to spread loss amongst a great number of influential people and prove that no one is safe, even when doing something as standard as going to school. In order to prevent a terrorist attack, all organizations must realize that they are vulnerable and improve security measures. Universities are often not well guarded, and the fact that campuses can sprawl over a large area makes them especially difficult to protect (Jenkins & Goodman, 2015). According to Stern (2013), leaders who have the mentality that “it could happen here,” are more motivated to take the steps necessary to guard against potential threats than those who believe that crises can only happen somewhere else.
