Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros

About the Paper

As you read Caramelo, reflect on Lala, Angel, and Reyna. Much like many immigrants, they come from two worlds.

To build their identities, they require the stories of their ancestors, particularly the stories that are rarely told.

For this reflection, write about the similarities you see among the three main characters.

Focus on the reasons you think the authors wrote these stories of family’s influence on a person’s identity.

Tell me how you believe each author presented family and cultural influences on the main characters’ identity development.

The Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to work on how to analyze a primary source.

Reading a source critically is one of the historian’s most fundamental skills. Primary sources are sources created in the period being researched and by the people being researched.
Choose a document from the Source Collection from Chapters 9 through 14.

The first question to address is:

What is the context of the document?
Context can be summed up as the what, when, where and why. For instance, it can mean the time period in which the document was written or what was going on politically, socially, or culturally in a society or even worldwide. Use your textbook for this.

In an essay of about 2 pages, address the following questions to the best of your ability. Do not rewrite the questions in your paper. Answer them in paragraph form.

1) Who wrote the document? Whose perspective does it represent? Who was its intended audience? (This one can be a challenge. That’s why it’s important to find the context.)

2) When was the document written?

3) Why was the document written??

4) What can the document tell us about society at the time it was written?

5) How does the document fit into the scope of the course? What is going on at the time that makes this document relevant?

6) Address the questions at the end of the document in paragraph format, do not rewrite the questions.

Please use parenthetical citations for any needed citations.

Try to use direct quotes from the primary source,
References should be as specific as possible. Use the author if given, or use the name of the editor (Carnegie, 23).

If there isn’t a clear author cite the title of the article.

Also include a works cited section or page with the complete reference. The following is an example.
