The Importance of Creative Nonfiction Genre in Nonfiction Prose

Creative nonfiction is a genre of writing emphasized in the Intermediate Composition course. It focuses on merging the gap between literary fiction and nonfiction research works. Creative nonfiction prose is a piece of writing that is composed of real accounts from an event or an occurrence that is merged with other literary styles equally adopted in the writing. The genre is important to both the writer and the reader since it improves the quality of the piece and makes it interesting to the intended audience. The genre is clearly depicted in the writings of Audubon as indicated by the inclusion of different literary styles when reporting his research on American birds. As long as the fact base of the prose is maintained, nonfiction writings can be made as interesting and attractive as the fiction tales. As demonstrated in Audubon’s Journal of 1826, creative nonfiction prose promotes the factual presentation of events in a compelling and dramatic manner to enthrall the target audience.

The purpose of creative nonfiction prose is to present and shape a nonfiction write-up in the narrative form. The text must be written based on accurate data as well as adopt literary styles to bring out the fictitious aspect. Nonfiction write-ups such as memoir, biography, autobiography amongst others are tales drawn from active experiences of an individual who, in most instances, is the narrator. Since these nonfiction tales have a similar responsibility of conveying ideas to many disinterested readers, it is important that the experience of the piece is shaped to include the features of fiction (Caulley 424). In his writings, Audubon lays emphasis on various literary styles when arranging memoirs that convey his encounters and experiences during different stages of life. “We, at last, entered the Atlantic ocean this morning with propitious Breese-the land birds have left us” is an extract from the memoirs that gives an account of the author’s experience at the beginning of the journey (Audubon). The tone and choice of words used by the writer demonstrate the fictitious form of the memoirs. The result is a creative piece that is more interesting and will definitely mesmerize many readers of the nonfiction piece.

Originality is vital in developing factual nonfiction prose. The information presented needs to be a real and accurate reflection of an event. According to Lounsberry, a creative nonfiction report must communicate a “documentable subject” matter drawn from the real world contrary to inventions or imaginary occurrences generated by the writer’s mind. The aspect of the documentable subject as a major requirement in the development of creative nonfiction prose was also evident in the past. As evidenced by the accounts of Audubon, the scholar and artist focused on the documentation of real events as they occurred either in his own life or around him. The pinctures of birds, their botanical features and functions, were a replica of the real appearance and activities of the birds in the real world. In his desire to present information on the nature and quality of meat that can be taken from birds, Audubon focused on carrying out organoleptic tests to improve the accuracy of his findings. The use of accurate and real data in the formation of the report is important in the formation of informative nonfiction prose.

The inclusion of literary styles is nonfiction prose makes the write-up less boring. Most of nonfiction prose is based on statistics and data that may be uninteresting to the potential readers. Accounts of events as they occur in the environment without adopting any form of literary styles will result in the production of a less attractive document, even though it may contain comprehensive information on the subject matter. The inclusion of literary styles such as character development during the presentation of the facts is important in enhancing the flow and attractiveness of the write-up. This aspect of creative nonfiction prose is evident from the accounts and writings of Audubon. Other than just sticking to the presentation of nature and features of birds, the writer has focused on character development to enhance the flow and attract potential readers of the text.

The tone and voice used in the presentation of the texts also enhance the creative nature of nonfiction prose. It is important that a writer uses a tone that reflects the experience or events being witnessed as well as the attitude that is being communicated. The tone can vary from happy to sad depending on the events being communicated. The purpose of using a suitable tone in the description is not only to get the attention of the reader but to also ensure that they will connect with the text. According to the writings of Audubon, the scholar changes tone in certain instances from happy to sad. The happy tone is observed during his encounters with the new friends in Europe, while the sad tone is presented when he thinks of his family, specifically the wife. The correct use of tonal variation is important since it is a clear reflection of the intent of the piece. Proper use of tone when presenting a creative piece ensures that the reader is able to identify and connect with the occurrences being communicated.

Creatively presenting the events and occurrences in nonfiction prose is more beneficial to the readers than just focusing on reporting the incidences. The use of imagery is important in communicating facts since it ensures that a better understanding is achieved. Writing creative nonfiction prose requires that the author focuses on showing the events rather than just detailing the information as drawn from the source. This idea is exemplified by the many images used by Audubon in his writings. The idea of the scholar was to get the attention of the reader as well as enhance their ability to gather adequate information from the piece. The many images of birds presented in the piece are to illustrate their nature and features that are complemented by the texts used by the writer. The inclusion of images in the writing of nonfiction prose is important in ensuring that the information being communicated is properly understood. Creative nonfiction is more interesting and informative to the targeted audience. Besides communicating the facts as desired in any nonfiction write-up, the genre ensures that additional literary features are included in the write-up to enhance its attractiveness and make it interesting to the readers (Bourelle 67). Indeed, as observed in the case of Audubon, the approach makes his works more thrilling to the target audience. The implication is enhanced acquisition of knowledge since many readers are convinced to access the journal. Creativity in the development and writing of nonfiction pieces is important to enhancing the quality and attractiveness of the prose.

The Causes and Effects of Monsoon Winds in South East Asia

Monsoons occur as a result of deviations in the normal patterns and direction of wind circulation. Such changes are mostly witnessed in Southern and Eastern Asia. In South East Asia, an off-shore flow of the wind in winter and an on-shore flow in summer are reported. The winds tap moisture in their movement causing a seasonal form of precipitation with heavy rains in summer and a pronounced dry winter due to the off-shore movement of the wind. A better part of the population in South East Asia and the world as a whole relies on monsoon rains for agriculture. On the other hand, floods may also be witnessed during the rains, leading to significant damages. Besides bringing the much-needed rains to the patched areas, monsoon winds can also cause floods that have adverse social and economic implications for the affected areas.

Causes of Monsoon Winds

The occurrence of monsoon winds is attributed to the uneven changes in atmospheric temperatures. The unequal warming of the Earth surface and the oceans causes changes in the direction of the wind. In summer, the high temperatures present a warm surface characterized by low atmospheric pressure. The cold temperature and high pressures in the ocean instigate an on-shore movement of the oceanic air (Hess and Tasa 127). On the other hand, the low temperatures and high pressures in winter results in an off-shore movement of the winds. The difference in the atmospheric pressures of the ocean and the content as a result of the difference in temperatures is the major cause of monsoon winds and monsoon rains.

The occurrence and impacts of monsoon winds are constantly reported in South East Asia. The monsoon seasonal rains in the region are as a result of the East Asian and South Asian monsoon winds. The summer monsoon is witnessed at the south where onshore winds move from the Indian oceans into the mainland causing rains. The winter season is observed in East Asia and is characterized by the offshore movement of winds from the dry land to the ocean. As a result, the winters in the region remains dry (Hess and Tasa 128). Even though the onshore winds are also experienced in summer in East Asia, they are not as notable as those observed in the south. Nevertheless, these winds also carry some moisture to the mainland causing precipitations, though in lower volumes and for a short period.

The Effects of Monsoon Winds

Monsoon winds control seasonal rains in different parts of the world. Agricultural activities conducted in most parts of the world are dependent on these weather events. Since agriculture supports many livelihoods, the monsoon winds play a major role in assuring food security (Hess and Tasa 127). Any delay in the rain results in severe drought that has both economic and social negative effects.

In some instances, the rains witnessed during summer occur in heavy volumes causing dangerous floods. These floods are mostly witnessed in South Asia. A case in point is the floods witnessed in Nepal, Bangladesh, and India as a result of monsoon winds. The floods caused significant damages, including displacement of communities in the region, blocking or roads and barring children from accessing the school. About 1200 people died due to the floods (Haroon).  Monsoon winds may be beneficial in bringing rain to the patched areas; however, the adverse effects of floods that may occur from the heavy runs witnessed in March cannot be overlooked.

The term monsoon winds refers to the changes in the direction of the wind that either cause drought or floods in the patched areas. These winds occur as a result of the thermal-instigated changes in the atmospheric pressures of the ocean and the mainland. The monsoon winds are mostly witnessed in South and East Asia. Apart from being the major source of seasonal rains that support agriculture, monsoon winds can cause floods that result in deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of people.

Your discussion on Ocean heat waves is detailed and explanatory. The exhaustive description of the causes and dangers of the heat waves avails a proper understanding of the concept. It is correct that climate change and the greenhouse gases on the atmosphere contributes to the heating of the waves. I also agree with you that the rising levels of greenhouses gases factors have intensified the temperatures of the waves as well as enhanced their frequency. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the duration of the heat waves has also changed as a result of climate change. It is reported that the increasing levels of greenhouse gases have led to a 17% increase in the duration of the heat waves. Besides the changes in temperature and frequency of the heat waves, climate change has also impacted on the duration of the heat waves.

A Day out with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I have always loved listening and watching the performances of Wolfgang Mozart. During the grand New Year festivities at Versailles, I was privileged to watch the young talented musician perform, alongside his sister before the sovereign. Wolfgang’s mastery of keyboard left me wondering how he has attained such expertise at a young age. I loved music and have always dreamed of learning how to play different instruments. Looking at Wolfgang perform confidently, I knew that I could learn a lot from him. Being near of the same age group, I wanted to spent time with him, at least to know his source of motivation and expertise in playing the piano and violin.

In trying to secure a date with him, I managed to get in touch with him through his dad. When he confirmed our meeting at the Church in Versailles, I knew my dreams of becoming an acclaimed artist would become a reality. My aim was to learn from Wolfgang, by listening to his story and implementing his strategies to advance my skills and expertise in music.

The day began with an informal discussion that saw Wolfgang share with me the details of his life. I learned that his home town was Salzburg, and that he was on a trip with his family to make his music known (“Wolfgang Mozart”). Wolfgang and his family first relocated to Munich and Vienna with the goal of performing many concerts in the region to gain popularity. While he did not take part in any concert in Munich, he gave a concert in the house of count Wilczek and Schonbrunn palace in Vienna.

Mozart has visited many places and performed to different audiences. His personality strongly reflects his experiences during the trips (Riding). Even though I am slightly older than him, I definitely know he is my mentor. His precocious knowledge of the world and his extraordinary skills in music makes him an outstanding artist. He said that he attained the title of a child prodigy due to his exceptional performances that matched an adult expert. Despite his undisputed talent, there was also something very immature in his manner (Kivy 250). Nevertheless, as the discussions progressed, I knew I was going to learn more from the talented artist.

Then, he began sharing some tips on piano and violin playing.  I learned that his music prowess was a result of the teaching he received from his dad. He did not go to any school. According to him, learning and acquiring new skills required motivation and the zeal to explore new things. To break the monotony of the music lesson, we engaged in a wordplay game. It was one of Wolfgang’s favorite indoor games. He said that in future he might even write riddles himself and let his friends solve them (Deutsch 265). Apart from achieving maximum relaxation, he enjoyed engaging the brain in any play, thus the high interest in wordplay games.

Time elapsed and we had to part ways. Wolfgang was not only a good artist but he also proved to me that he could be a good teacher of music. From him, I learned that learning music techniques required self-motivation and guidance from an experienced person. This conviction has been my guide in the journey towards becoming an artist. I am not just able to play the piano and violin, but I am also capable of writing my compositions thanks to the motivation and inspiration I received from Wolfgang.

Boko Haram Crisis in Nigeria

The catastrophic terrorism attacks initiated by the Islamic sect “Boko Haram” have raised serious concerns in Nigeria, specifically the northern part of the country. Several acts of violence initiated by the ferocious terror group have resulted in deaths or maiming of Nigerians. From their attacks on police formations in Bauchi (July 2009) to the most recent ones that saw the abduction of Chibok school girls and occupation of the town of Baga, Boko Haram is a national security concern in the region (Adesoji, 2010). Attempts by the Nigerian Federal Government to counter the attacks through arrests and/or assassinations have resulted in a series of effective military strikes. However, the strategy has failed to defeat or contain the terrorists, presenting the need for further analysis of the situation to develop more effective counterterrorism measures.

The Boko Haram terrorism attacks have continually shown significant threat to the political, social, and economic sectors of Nigeria. The group was initially non-violent until the murder of its leader Yusuf Mohammed by the Nigerian police force in 2009. Since then, a paradigm shift in the ideology of the group was observed, it resulted in a series of attacks that claimed more than 10000 lives and displaced about 90000 Nigerians.

The Nigerian economy is overly dependent on foreign investment. It is reported that foreign investments contributes more to the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product than manufacturing (Bamidele, 2012). Any negative impact on its economy or political and social systems affects the operations and performance of foreign firms. The ability of foreign investments to propel sustainable development in the region remains a vital challenge due to the catastrophic actions of Boko Haram.

Book Haram crisis is not just a Nigerian issue but an international one. The group has become more troublesome and successful in most of its attacks that have targeted both Nigerian and foreign establishments. The threats that the sect will move beyond it shores to other regions of the world is becoming a reality. As observed, the terror group is aligning with other organizations such as al-Qaeda to access the global space (Onuoha & Ugwueze, 2014). Boko Haram is likely to cause more damage in future if not contained.

The Nigerian state and Federal government’s direct military attacks on the terrorists have remained unsuccessful. As such, calls for adoption of alternative measures are mounting.  Different groups, including domestic and foreign investors, community-based companies, and consumers, have also presented the need for an appropriate solution that will contain and defeat the imminent and experience of Boko Haram (Bamidele, 2012). A strategy that will offer a lasting solution to the menace, as well as promote a sustainable future, is urgent. Foreign humanitarian interventions, redistribution of justice, negotiations and national conferences are some of the alternative measures of counterterrorism management that can be employed.

A military approach as a counterterrorism approach has been vehemently challenged in the context of the Boko Haram terror group. The direct attacks on the terror group have been met with counter attacks that have instigated more deaths and displacement of persons. Different groups, including foreign investors, have echoed the ineffectiveness of the military approach in fighting the Boko Haram terror group. A change of tactic to implement alternative measures is needed to counter the activities of the terrorists.

Policy Recommendations

  1. Negotiate with the terror groupBring all the stakeholders to a discussion including the Nigerian community, foreigninvestors, and the government. Listen to the demands of the sect and find a way forward in the resolution of the conflicts
  2. Focus on redistribution of justice– This approach will ensure that the underlying issues in the nation-building process of the country are addressed. Nigerians will view themselves as a unified nation, eliminating the possibility of any terrorists

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Book Review

This book review targets medical students undertaking their internships at a general hospital. The review focuses on medical ethics as portrayed in the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The author ofthe book titled The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks communicates the nature of the certain research practices commonplace in the past that are recognized as unethical in the modern medical settings. Skloot vividly illustrates and discredits the scientific conventions as she conveys the Lacks family’s agonizing experience. The mother of the family Henrietta died of cancer, but her cells live on as a lab specimen because they were harvested without her permission. The author presents all the hidden facts that are available at the present moment. Humanity is still benefiting from the research made possible by the likes of Henrietta Lacks who is not unrecognized and forgotten. As such, while the discoveries of the previous generations of scientists are significant, their lack of ethics is all the more significant in informing the current medical practices.

Ethics and morality in medical practice are an issue of critical concern to any practitioner. Four major principles including non-maleficence, autonomy, justice, and beneficence guide the daily actions of professionals in the modern medical sphere. Such aspects of medical ethics were also evident in the past as documented by Skloot. Ethics and morality are a prominent theme in the book as there are numerous ethical arguments on informed consent that falls under the principle of autonomy. Autonomy dictates that patients make decisions concerning their health independently. As such, prior to any medical procedure the informed consent of the patients on whether they agree with the process must be sought. Additionally, the patients must be given an opportunity to make the decision without any form of coercion. The benefits, likelihood of success, and/or any possible failures must also be communicated to the patient before they are taken for any medical procedure.

Several instances in the book that how essential the principle of autonomy is. Henrietta Lacks was an African American wife and mother of five. She sought treatment for an aggressive type of cervical cancer. Doctors at Johns Hopkins without her consent and knowledge extracted her cancerous and healthy cell samples which they employed in the formation of HeLa (an immortal cell line); the specimen was used in numberless discoveries and medical innovations (Skloot 33). Even though the patient involved in the case had signed a consent form that allowed the medical practitioners at Johns Hopkins to conduct a surgical procedure, she was only informed of the medical processes for treatment of cancer and not research (Skloot 31). Autonomy requires that a patient is informed of all possible medical procedures so they can make informed decisions on whether to undergo the surgical procedure or not. The actions of the medical practitioner was unethical and would be unacceptable in the modern medical setting.

Henrietta underwent treatment during a period when medical ethics were implemented differently in relation to the current principles. In the 1950s some medical values such as confidentiality were considered important; however, much attention was not paid to issues such as informed concerned and autonomy (Skloot 33). It was assumed that doctors know what was paramount to their patients. As such, patients were only occasionally engaged in the decision-making on their health conditions. The balance between medical paternalism and patient anatomy as medical professionals know and understand it today has shifted significantly. As such, adhering to the principle of autonomy is mandatory in the current medical field.

Analysis of the Review

The review targeted medical students; as such, medical terms were used in the analysis. It is assumed that medical students who have completed the undergraduate program have adequate knowledge and are conversant with professional jargon, so explanations were not necessary. Furthermore, the the review only focused on conveying information on the issues of ethics and morals as observed in the medical field because these topics are relevant to young medical practitioners.

An official tone was used in the presentation of the review since the writer had no direct personal association with students. Additionally, the intent of the review was to inform the audience of the issue of medical ethics, justifying the relevance of an official tone. Only cases on medical ethics were reviewed, other topics discussed in the book were not included in the review.

Note on Rhetorical Analysis Rhetorical analysis refers to the breakdown of a non-fiction work into parts and provision of an explanation on how the various parts work to inform or persuade an audience. Throughout the class, I learned that a non-fiction work can contain content suitable for a wide range of audiences. It is possible to undertake a rhetoric analysis of a work to communicate with the selected group of people. Regardless of the intention of the chosen content, proper selection of a tone suitable for the chosen audience is desired. I used rhetoric analysis skills and tone selection to formally inform the medical students on the issue of medical ethics and morality.

Lessons Drawn From the Environmental Studies and Forestry Course

Human activities can cause serious negative effects on the environment, interfering with the attainment of sustainability. I have always known that human acts such as cutting down trees, pollution, or use of fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases have adverse effects on the environment. However, I have never thought that activities focused on the development of an economy could cause serious damage to the environment. By undertaking the course on environmental studies and forestry, I learned that even though activities such as urbanization and construction of new housing are a sign of economic growth of a community, they have serious effects on the environment.

Urban sprawl and construction of many buildings result in more concrete covering the landscape, interrupting the natural water cycle. Moreover, uncontrolled expansion of urban locales bares groundwater from soaking into the ground and interfering with the growth of vegetation and forests. Construction of more houses in a region means forests and other vegetation must be cleared to avail the required land. This process has direct negative effects on the environment since it causes the destruction of vegetation and land degradation. Further, more buildings are a serious source of pollution that has negative effects on the environment. I now understand that some of the changes in the environment as a result of uncontrolled construction of houses are irreparable. The changes in the natural water cycle are irreversible, and as such, the damages are likely to ensue if prevention measures are not put in place.

The world population is rising and the need for many housing units remains pervasive. As such, more houses will be constructed. However, it is important that people change the materials and designs of the housing units. I will not only communicate on the importance of using sustainable building materials but will also advocate for the use of solar energy in housing units. I am now more focused on operating a green home through efficient use or resources, reusing and recycling, and promoting sustainability.

I was aware that human activities have a negative effect on the environment. However, during the class I have learned that urbanization and construction of new housing specifically can lead to irreparable damage, polluting groundwater and leading to land degradation. I now vow to be more environmentally conscious and focus on “green” living.

Netmums is a platform that offers parental guidance to parents in the UK. The website operates as a network of local other sites that avails relevant information to fathers and mothers on parenting.

Any parent in the UK is eligible to join the website and participate in the discussions. The major issues discussed over the platforms include parenting guide for single parents, feeding programs, taking care of sicknesses and dealing with teenagers amongst others.

The information on parenting is availed by parents who work in form of a network. The major ethical issue of concern that might arose in this group is the accuracy of the information being provided. Since the ideas and advices are based on opinions of different people, it is difficult to judge which of the responses are authentic and should be taken as an advice. It is thus important that parents who join the group do some research before picking up any information as an authentic advice.

The Beginnings of Powwows in Oklahoma

The concept of Powwow dance originated from the Plain Indians who occupied the southern prairies of Canada in the year 1879. During this period, the plain Indians tribes formulated intertribal alliances that supported the exchange and sharing or dances, songs and other ceremonies; this marked the emergence of the powwow festivals that mostly involves showcasing and sharing of the artistic prowess of a community.

During World War I, the Indians offered massive support to the Americans despite their previous disagreements and tensions. A significant number of Indians remains emotionally disturbed during the war due to their worry about the condition of the soldiers who went to the war.  When the war ended the veterans were appreciated through a homecoming party held for both the Americans and Indian militants. The homecoming celebrations further escalated the growth and acceptance of powwow festivals. The two communities set aside their differences to dance to the drum beats and songs as well as exchange certain cultural values and beliefs. Commemoration of the day was initiated as an honor to the veteran who took part in the war.

The combinations of the ancient traditions with the new procedures and beliefs of the time led to interesting powwow dances and songs. This new version of the powwow dances and songs was first held in, Oklahoma, in the year 1920.

In the early 1950s, the Powwow celebrations were introduced into the city after the migration of the American Chinese in search of jobs. A wider opportunity for sharing and cultural exchange was presented in the cities further leading to the growth and expansion of the Powwow festivals to different states in North America.

Currently, powwow festivals are held in nearly all parts of North America. The festival occurs every year and is mostly conducted over the weekends. Powwow festival is not just attended by the Indians in North America, but also draws a large number of Native Americans as well as attracts different visitors from other parts of the world.

Time Diary Log Analysis

  1. How do you spend your time? Based on the data you collected, summarize each day (no more than one paragraph for each day – hit the highlights). Explain any differences between the way you spend time on the weekdays and weekend.

Being an employed teacher, my day basically involves teaching and interacting with pre-school kids. All my days begin with a 40-minute devotion with the family, 1 hour exercising, and a 1 hour-preparation of breakfast and sharing the same with family.

On Mondays, I teach the kids and guide them through the specific assignments for the day. In the afternoon I guide the children through their co-curricular activities such as cricket playing, music lessons and skating. The school work ends at 5pm. In the evenings (throughout the three days) I prepare meals for the family, share the same together that takes about 4 hours. We then take a 2 hour-period indulging in some discussions with the family members before retiring to bed.

A slightly different schedule is observed on Wednesday where the day begins with computer lessons. This is followed with a swimming lesson at around mid-day. In the afternoon, we engage in scouting activities with the kids. The same routine of meal preparation and discussions before sleeping is observed on this day.

I do not go to school on Sundays, as such, I mostly indulge in leisure activities during this time. After doing the normal morning activities and chores, I attend the church service at 10 am. I spend the better part of the afternoon watching movies. In the evening participate in volleyball game with my friends, before doing the normal evening chores of food preparation for the family.

  • What percentage of your total time was spent tending to existence? How much to subsistence? How much was discretionary time? Create a pie chart (using the chart feature in Word – see this page (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for assistance) to demonstrate the relationship between these three areas of time.

Subsistence refers to the time spent working and with the family. On the other hand, existence time refers to the period allocated for meeting the physical and psychological needs of an individual. Discretionary time is the leisure time, a period left after all the tasks have been executed.

  • What percentage of the total time did you multitask? Divide the total number of minutes (for all three days) by the number of minutes you were doing more than one things at once. Discuss the pros and cons of multitasking in your life.

Multitasking refers to the execution of more than one task at the same time. Multitasking has got its benefits and disadvantages. One of the benefits of multitasking is that it saves on time. The excessive time spent waiting to start a new task can be detrimental to the overall plan of an individual. Multitasking is essential in minimizing the waste time and ensuring time is efficiently used.

Multitasking is also essential in enhancing the focus of an individual. The concentration level of a person is likely to improve by execution of many things at once.

Multitasking instill the skills needed to deal with interruptions. When multitasking, one is expected to shift from one task to the next. In essence, multitasking assist an individual learn how to start and stop an activity within the shortest time possible.

Multitasking is however not without some disadvantages. Deep thinking is required for an individual to multitask successfully. Also, a high level of attention is needed when multitasking. People who multitask are likely to procrastinate things and issues. These individuals are likely to dissociate themselves from the task at hand (Pablo). Efficiency is also a problem in multitasking. The process creates unnecessary busywork for an individual causing inefficiency in time management.

  • What percent of your total time did you spend with personal technology (computer, tablet, radio, phone, TV, etc.)? Discuss what technology you used, when you used it and why.

I used a computer to watch a movie over the weekend. This movie was available on YouTube platform, thus with the use of the internet, I managed to stream live and access the movie. I did watch over the weekend, and the main reason was for entertainment and leisure purposes.

  • During the three days, what percentage of the total time were you physically active? Discuss whether or not you would like to change this and why.

9.7 %

Besides the 1 hour exercise that I indulge in every day, also participate in some physical activities with the kids and my friends over the weekend. In most cases, I am active and believe that the nature of physical activities I currently undertake are sufficient in assisting me maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • What percentage of the total time were you alone? Would you change this if you could? Why?

The only time I was alone within the three days was when watching the movie. This time was spent for leisure and I would not want to change it. I also need time alone, especially during entertainment and leisure, as such; I would still spend the same time alone

  • Compare and contrast the activities you liked the most with those you liked the least. What percentage of the total time did you spend on activities you liked? What percentage of the total time did you spend on activities you did not like? Is this the way you want it to be?
Liked Time Disliked Time
Teaching 7 hours Swimming 1 hour
Computer lessons 2 hours Scouting 2 hours
Extra-curricular 6 hours Exercising 3 hours
Church service 3 hours
Cooking 15 hours
Devotion 2 hours
Resting 24 hours
Watching movie 2 hours
Volleyball 3 hours
Family discussions 2 hours

I spent 91.7% of the time doing what I liked. The remaining 8.3% I spent doing what I did not like. Since most of the time in indulge in activities that I enjoy doing, I am contented with the situation. However, I am working to improve my attitude towards the other activities so that I mostly engage in activities that I enjoy doing.

  • Evaluate and critique your discretionary time use, including the strengths and weaknesses. Are you using your leisure well? Do you have more, less, or the same amount of discretionary time now that you believed you had?

Spending much time on leisure activity is essential since it gives an individual time to rejuvenate, and increase their divergent thinking. Leisure activities also provide an opportunity for the mind to wonder enhancing the thinking capacity of an individual. It is also observed that leisure activities are desirable since they enhance the enthusiasm and motivation of an individual to work. People are likely to work harder when they have a break and engage in leisure activities during the break.

I spent my leisure time playing volleyball and watching a movie. This time is limited in relation to the time spent on doing extraneous work. I have enough time over the weekends for leisure activities however as indicated, I only spent 5 hours on leisure activities. I have always wanted to spend the better part of the weekend engaging in discretionary activities, at least for 8 hours. I am focused on creating more time to ensure, I spend the time I desire on leisure activities.

  • Discuss at least three things you learned from this assignment about how you are currently spending your time

From this assignment, I have learnt that I spend most of my time doing subsistence tasks. Minimal time is spent on leisure and other existence activities. The latter two activities are also important, I thus need to create more time for leisure activities since they are not only for entertainment but are also important for rejuvenation and motivation of an individual

  1. Explain one thing you are going to change about how you spend your time as a result of this assignment.

Las Vegas, Nevada, Photograph Interpretation

The picture was taken on October 3, 2019, in Les Vegas, Nevada. The image is of a Joshua tree growing in a desert.

The area captured in the photo is a part of the Mojave desert. As observed, the region is rich in unique vegetation that is particularly adapted to arid climates. Some of the species common in the area surrounding Las Vegas are succulents like aloe vera, trees, grasses, and cacti. The growth rate of the cactus plants differs, with some growing to greater heights than the others (Zemon). Cactus plants are particularly famous for their ability to survive in any dry area, places where no other flora can thrive. The ground is covered by shrubs and grasses with a mountain clearly visible in the background. The shrubs are most likely creosote bushes (Larrea tridentata), common to the Mojave Desert. The grasses are harder to identify. The center of the picture is occupied by the Joshua tree also known Yucca brevifolia or yukka palm. The plant is closely associated with Mojave desert to the point where it inspired the naming of a national park.

Cacti plants are mainly native to South and North America. There are, however, some exceptional species that have been spotted in Tropical Africa and Sri Lanka. The plant is believed to have emerged 30 million years ago; however, it evolved into a new species after the continental drift (Zemon). This circumstance explains why cacti are rare on some continents and present in others.

Cactus plant has unique plant features to enable it to survive in the drylands. Deserts and semi-desert regions receive minimal rainwater. As such, plants growing in such regions have to adapt to the dry environment (Mackenzie). The body and stem of cactus swell in periods when there is sufficient moisture to store water for the plant. In times of drought, the body shrinks following the use of the stored water in the process of photosynthesis.

The most significant adaptation for survival in dry regions is the cactus spines. These are modified leaves that help the plant adapt to extreme weather conditions. It is observed that regular leaves have a high surface area which would cause excessive loss of water through transpiration (Mackenzie). Cactus plant reduces the surface area by modifying the leaves into spines. These spines are also beneficial in the collection of moisture from the environment that is dripped back into the country for survival. Additionally, the spines are important in warding off predators from the plant, contributing further to its longevity.

Living in the arid and semi-arid areas also contributes to the survival of the cactus plants. Since such areas receive minimal rain, other plants cannot thrive in the region. As a result, cacti face no competition for the nutrients on the ground (Zemon). In instances that the weather and the environment become extremely harsh for the plant, they are likely to become dormant and start thriving when favorable conditions ensue. Cacti plants are highly adaptive which enables them to endure different environmental conditions.  Joshua Trees share many of the adaptations to the environment that cacti have. Their leaves are long and narrow, resembling needles or daggers. They have complex and extensive roots to collect moisture more efficiently. They strive in grasslands as shown in the picture.
